Hemorrhoids/Rectal Bleeding

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen cushions of vascular tissue that are normally present inside the anus and on the skin just at the outside edge of the anus.  Everyone has them.  Due to pressure from pregnancy, straining from lifting heavy weights or expelling hard bowel movements, or other factors, they can become enlarged and cause problems.  These problems include:

  • Pain
  • Lumps
  • Prolapse (when a hemorrhoid that’s supposed to be inside pops out)
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Bleeding
  • Excessive perianal moisture and irritation

How are hemorrhoid problems treated?

If weight is an issue, changing your habits for a healthier diet and losing a few pounds can help reduce the irritation that hemorrhoids can cause. Additional hemorrhoid treatments include:

  • Over-the-counter products such as creams or ointments
  • Soaking in a warm bathtub with or without bath salts
  • Using soft toilet paper, wet wipes, or cleansing lotions
  • Cold compresses (often with Witch Hazel)
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers

Interestingly, soap can irritate hemorrhoids, but be sure to clean the area with warm water during a shower or bath every day.

If none of these solutions work, Dr. Sternberg may inject a chemical into the blood vessel to reduce its size. If you have prolapsing hemorrhoids, Dr. Sternberg can cut off the circulation to the hemorrhoid by placing a band around it, causing it to shrink.

What should I do if I notice blood when I go to the bathroom?

Red blood in your stool or on your toilet paper may be from hemorrhoids, but bleeding from the rectum can also be a sign of serious diseases such as colon and anal cancer. Call or book an appointment online with The Sternberg Clinic today to ensure you receive the correct diagnosis and treatment.
